Intellectual Property: Intellectual property (IP) is any idea, concept that a person/s has developed. IP is not restricted to patents, but can also include copyrights, trademarks, & trade secrets.
Patents: A patent is a legal grant by a government to allow an inventor the right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention for a limited period of time. In return the invention must be publicly disclosed so that it encourages innovation, technical development, & ultimately economic prosperity.
Copyrights: Inventions are ideas that have been reduced to practice, i.e. they have been put in a tangible form before it is patented. As patents protect ideas reduced to practice, copyrights protect the expression of ideas & not the idea itself. Copyrights generally last for the life of the author plus 50 years.
Trademarks: Trademarks are names used by manufacturers to identify their products from others. Trademarks are used to maintain the reputation of the manufacturer. Trade Secrets: A trade secret is critical information or know-how of a business that is kept out of the public domain. Probably the most famous trade secret is the formula for Coke-a-cola.
Commercialisation: Commercialisation is the taking of IP to market. This can be product manufacture & sales or technology assignment & licensing.
PCT: The patent cooperation treaty (PCT) provides a method of filing patent applications for the same invention in several different countries at one time while providing limited IP protection.
